Breaking It Down
Feast Week Fallout:
Thanksgiving week is one of the best in college basketball, as we were absolutely spoiled with ranked vs ranked games, headlined by two Gonzaga games. The Bulldogs handled UCLA handily, but looked extremely human Friday night as Coach K’s farewell tour claimed its first big victim. Duke moves up to #1, while the Zags drop to #3, with UCLA clinging to the fifth spot.
Tournament play always causes chaos, and it did this week. Kansas, Memphis, and Alabama took a tumble down the rankings after losing as big favorites to Dayton, Iowa State, and Iona respectively.
Welcome To The Rankings:
Four teams end up making the rankings after being unranked in our most recent poll. Michigan State lost to Baylor, but two hard fought wins in Atlantis over Loyola Chicago and UConn land them at #16. Wisconsin won the Maui in Las Vegas, and reaped the rewards of beating Houston and a good St Mary’s squad, reaching the top 20 in their debut. Iowa State shockingly won the NIT, and is arguably the most surprising team to make the poll so far this year, as TJ Otzlberger has the Cyclones ranked #20 after goin 2-22(!!!) last season. And finally, LSU enters at #22, with lots of talent but finally adding 3 top-100 wins this week after having no top 100 matchups in their previous games.
We’ll (Maybe?) See You Again:
Four teams in means four teams out. Illinois has proved to be just as disappointing as fellow preseason Big 10 favorite Michigan, as both have tumbled out of the rankings after being top 10 teams to start the year. After winning the Charleston Classic, St. Bonaventure had a disappointing home loss against Northern Iowa. And finally, another Big 10 team fell out, as Indiana still hasn’t lost but didn’t have the votes to remain in this week’s poll.
We head into another great week of basketball, headlined by the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, where two of college basketball’s premiere conferences will square off under strange circumstances. The two conferences have only a combined 4 teams ranked in our poll, and will look to gain some back with quality wins this week.
