Movers And Shakers
Top Five Hold Fast:
There was a solid debate last week for the final spot in the top 5 as Creighton and Kansas tied for the spot heading into their matchup. Kansas took the game by a point, proving how close the teams were, and solidifying themselves as the #5 team. Now, the top five spots are unanimous across the board, with everyone sharing the same rankings
Non-Power? Non-Problem:
After San Diego State beat previously ranked Arizona State, they Aztecs jumped into the rankings for the first time. There are now 3 teams in the top 25 outside of the CBB Power conferences (P5 + Big East), as Houston (#6), SDSU (#19), and Saint Louis (#22), all represent a different non power conference. The Pac 12 does not have a ranked team.
Tennessee Backs Up The Hype:
Despite not playing a game all season, the Volunteers were still ranked #15 last week thanks to some preseason hype. This week they started their season with two solid non-conference wins over Colorado and Cincinnati, vaulting them from #15 to #10.
See You Soon… Or Will We?
Four teams this week dropped out of the rankings, and some of them in ugly fashion. Virginia Tech fell out of the rankings after being slotted at #11 thanks to a 20 point loss against Penn State at home, was the Villanova win a flash in the pan or will the Hokies work their way back up the rankings? Richmond was ranked #18 headed into a top 25 matchup with West Virginia, where they also got absolutely smacked losing by 16 to the Mountaineers after trailing by 30 at one point. Arizona State lost to the aforementioned San Diego State to fall to 4-2, with their record vs Top 100 teams at 0-2. Finally, Florida lost to in state rival Florida State, but the real story from that game is Keyontae Johnson, as we hope and pray he safely recovers from his scary collapse.
New In Town:
As always, four teams out of the rankings means four new teams in. As mentioned San Diego State has seemingly retained their magic from last season, as they start the year 5-0 with wins over two Pac 12 programs along with solid mid major wins over Pepperdine (#102 in Kenpom) and UC Irvine (#153). The biggest jumper is Missouri, who debuts at #17 after a solid win over Illinois, sitting at 5-0 with three top 100 wins including Oregon and Wichita State. Clemson may be a football school but finds themselves with an arguably better resume this year in basketball despite the rankings, the Tigers are 4-0 against Top 100 teams, all of which were against P5 programs. Finally, after starting 6-0 Michigan finally gets some love debuting at #24, giving the B1G a whopping 7 ranked teams.
