Within the next week the Houston Rockets are about to prove to us that you can’t replace your traditional “big man” center and go small ball. PJ Tucker has been great for them but at the end of the day he’s a 6-foot-6 guy who shoots corner threes well. Against a team like the Lakers it is simply no match.
The Rockets small ball lineup is exciting to watch and has and can continue to win them individual games, but without a strong 6-foot-10 to 7-foot big man standing in the paint, they will not be able to reach the finals or ever close out a series against a team with significant big man presence (like the Lakers).
This tweet is interesting to me. Is small ball actually the future of the league? I don’t know. Maybe. However the best thing this tweet says is that small ball won’t work when when the opposing center has the quickness to guard 1-5 and the size to punish mismatches. In the tweet he is referring to Deandre Ayton but this also holds true for Anthony Davis, who was named All-Defensive First team yesterday.
