Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks enter the bubble in a great place in the Western Conference standings, as they are in no danger of falling out of the playoffs. The Mavericks currently hold the 7th seed in the West and are several games ahead of 8-seeded Grizzlies. While they can’t fall out of the playoffs, the Mavericks do have a chance to move up as high as the second seed in the Western Conference standings.
Getting all the way to the second seed is extremely unlikely, but reaching the fourth seed is something that is doable for the Mavs. This is very important for them because instead of playing a team like the Clippers or the Nuggets in the first round, they would play someone a bit less talented like the Thunder or the Jazz.
When evaluating the Mavericks roster it is easy for any basketball fan to see that they will go as far as their superstar guard, Luka Doncic, will take them. Averaging nearly 30 PPG, Doncic has the ability to handedly win games for the team in the bubble. Hopefully, for Mavericks fans, Luka doesn’t have to do it all on his own.
Kristaps Porzingis, 7-foot-3 PF/C, is fully healthy for bubble play and should be able to provide the team with a scoring spark. Right before the NBA shutdown Doncic and Porzingis seemed to be gaining chemistry on the court with one another. If these two can learn how to play with one another they will be a force to be reckon with in the bubble, and for years to come.
Every great basketball team has a player who flies under the radar a bit, yet is key to the teams success. For the Mavs, this player is Tim Hardaway Jr. Hardaway has averaged slightly over 15 points a game this season on 40.7% from beyond the arc. He fits into the Mavericks offense perfectly, playing off-ball and scoring most of his points off of catch and shoot scenarios.
If the Mavericks can move up at all in standings and avoid playing the current top-3 teams in the West, I think they will have an outside chance at getting to the finals. They have the talent to do so and while many believe that they are still a year or two away, crazier things have happened. At +4000 odds, the Mavs are definitely giant underdogs to pull off such a run, but its not impossible.
