Cam Newton Signs With Patriots

Cam Newton and the New England Patriots have reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $7.5 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

After a discouraging off-season for the Patriots, Bill Belichick finally pulled the trigger and signed Newton. Despite his obvious fit with the Patriots, they seemed to show no interest in any quarterback during most of the off-season. Everyone assumed that the Patriots were committed to Jarrett Stidham, the 23-year-old second year quarterback out of Auburn. We should’ve known better than to think we could get inside the unpredictable mind of Bill Belichick.

The next topic of discussion will be whether or not Newton and Stidham have a wide open position battle during training camp. Although Cam is a former MVP, he’s definitely not the quarterback he once was and it’s possible that the Patriots still think Stidham can be their guy for the upcoming season. With that said, even if Belichick still has faith in Stidham, it’s now clear that he doesn’t think he’s good enough to be the unquestioned starter going into camp. He felt a need to bring in more talent at the quarterback position.

Personally, I believe Cam Newton will be the Patriots’ starting quarterback in week 1 of the 2020-21 season. When he’s healthy, his exceptional size, talent, and athleticism simply cannot be left to rot on the sidelines. I also don’t think Newton would’ve signed with the Patriots if they told him that he might be backing up a second year, fourth round pick in Jarrett Stidham. Cam Newton is coming to the Patriots to play and to win.

After seeing Tom Brady lead the Patriots to a 12-4 record last season despite his subpar numbers, I truly think that if he stays healthy, Newton can lead the Patriots to a great season. I understand that he is past his prime, but his ability and strength are still elite. Playing in the Patriots’ system, I believe signing Cam Newton makes the Patriots a dangerous team that might surprise some people next season.
