When asked about what St. John’s fans what they can expect from him in the 2020-2021 season Vince Cole says, “St. John’s fans can expect a complete basketball player that works hard”. Vince Cole is a name that you may not recognize now, but come time for the season I can assure you he will quickly become a fan favorite and one of Mike Anderson’s go to players.
Cole is a Junior College recruit who has played his last two seasons at USC Salkehatchie. He is ranked as the number 6 overall JUCO prospect in the country according to jucorecruiting.com. This past season he appeared in 31 games and averaged 21.4 PPG, 5.5 RBP, and 3.5 APG. He achieved this statistics very efficiently shooting 51.8% from the field, 44.6% from 3, and 90.1% from the free throw line. These are simply outstanding numbers at any level of basketball.
Cole’s Role with the Johnnies
With the loss of LJ Figueroa many assume that Vince Cole will accept a lead scoring role this upcoming season for St. John’s. Standing at 6’6″ Cole is built to do just that. This past season St. John’s struggled mightily shooting the ball, but adding Cole to the roster adds a go to 3-point shooter and someone who will do a tremendous job of spacing the floor. He is a three level scorer and will be a problem for opposing defenses.
Choosing St. John’s
When it came down to choosing a school to attend this fall it seems as if becoming a Johnny was always the plan. Choosing St. John’s was an easy decision for Cole as he says that he’s “been able to build a relationship with the coaching staff for a couple years”. Not only did his close relationship with the coaching staff help his recruitment but so did his friendship with other players. When asked if he has been in touch with his teammates throughout the coronavirus pandemic Cole says, “I’ve been talking to all of my teammates, I knew some beforehand and all others I’ve been in contact with for a while”. Already being in contact with teammates is very important as it should make his transition to Queens and to Division 1 basketball seamless.
Of course a big draw for many of St. John’s recruits is getting the chance to play several games each year at Madison Square Garden. Vince Cole is no different, “I’m really excited to just play in Madison Square and just to get the opportunity to play D1 basketball”. Cole is a humble hard working kid who appears to be very thankful for the opportunity to play at St. John’s. One of the most important things for any sports team is having players who want to play for you and represent the school in the best possible way and that is what we are getting in Vince Cole.
