Petition for Josh Roberts to get More Minutes

While last season was certainly not very pretty for St. John’s, I was very lenient on my critique of Coach Mike Anderson.  For anyone who watched St. John’s last year, you know that we played in numerous games that went right down the wire.  Six of their games were decided by five points or fewer including some absolute heartbreakers at the Garden such as Seton Hall on January 18th and Georgetown on February 2nd.

Pictured above is Josh Roberts.

Now, as I said before for a new coach to compete the way Anderson did in a very strong Big East was impressive.  However, the way he handled Josh Roberts’ minutes really bothered me.  Josh Roberts impacts a basketball game in many positive ways, specifically on the defensive end.  On a team that greatly lacked size, Roberts was a solid rim protector for the Johnnies.  He averaged 1.5 blocks per game in just 19 MPG.  I can only imagine if he got 25-30 minutes of playing time that he’d be up over two blocks a game which would really be an outstanding accomplishment.  Only giving Roberts 19 minutes a game was a robbery of him as a player and for the fans who wanted to see wins.  It seemed as if Roberts would start each half and then Anderson would forget about him completely, never putting him back in the game.  I’m not quite sure what his reasoning for this was but it did not make any sense at all to me.  In the 2020-2021 season I hope to see Josh get more minutes and the Johnnies get more wins.
